5 Ways to keep your hair healthy when working out everyday

 

The question most of us struggle with after a super sweaty gym session (yes, we are talking to you Crossfitters & SoulCycle goers too!) is “Should I wash my hair?”

While the intensity, type and location of the workout can impact the way the hair will feel after, we have comprised a list of 5 ways to help you take care of your locks post gym session.

 

  1. Sweat is not oil, it is more like natural salty water. 

While less appealing, think of it like a free application of sea salt spray in moderate quantities. Too much and it can leave your hair dull and lifeless.

Tip: Blow dry the sweat out. Yes, you heard that right! This will keep the life of your wash longer.

 

  1. Pre-workout hair holy grail — Dry-shampoo.

Help your hair stay fresher for longer by applying it before intensive workouts. This helps absorb the sweat and allows the hair to keep more of its shape.

Fun fact: By its nature, dry shampoo is a very fine powder & therefore designed to be applied to dry hair. Using it post-workout can create a powder-water mix resulting in a cakey residue and no one wants that!

 

  1. Think relaxed hairdo.

Wet hair is more likely to break and damage easily. Tight & rigid hairstyles are more likely to pull and rip the strands. Opt for a looser braid or bun to keep the hair off your face and in place. Also, choosing a silk or satin tie will help prevent breakages due to the soft nature of the fibre.

 

  1. Check the weather forecast when training outdoors.

Particularly, extremely hot and cold weather can impact the general health of the hair and hair color making the hair strands brittle and frizzy. We recommend using a UV protection spray for those long runs in the sun. Skin and hair need the same level of protection from the damaging effects of the sun rays.

 

  1. Moisturise.

The heat, sweat, oils and movement you produce during a workout can all impact the health of natural or dyed hair (even more so for curly hair). It is essential to replenish the hair’s cuticle with moisture locking protein containing masks or treatments. Apply at least once a week to keep hair healthy and less likely to break.
